How to Sign “Pancake” in Sign Language

Pancakes, flapjacks, whatever you call ‘em, their delicious warm fluffiness is a classic American breakfast item. Did you know pancakes are one of the oldest forms of breakfast food, dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. The Greeks made flat cakes called "tagenites," while the Romans called them "alita dolcia," meaning "another sweet.”

Signing “Pancake”

  1. Hand shape: Start with your hands in a “closed-5” handshape.  Your non-dominant palm should be facing up, while your dominant hand starts palm facing down.
  2. Hand location: Bring your hands in front of your body at about chest level.
  3. Movement: Start with your dominant hand palm down on your non-dominant hand, then flip your hand and tap the backside of your dominant hand against your non-dominant hand.
  4. Facial expression: Keep a neutral facial expression.
