How to Sign “Butter” in Sign Language

Did you know at state fairs across the United States, butter sculptures are a popular attraction. These impressive works of art, often featuring life-sized animals or famous personalities, are carved from large blocks of butter and can weigh hundreds of pounds.

Signing “Butter”

  1. Hand shape: Start with your dominant hand in a “closed-2” handshape. Form your non-dominant hand into a “closed-5” handshape with your palm up.
  2. Hand location: Bring your hands in front of your body at about chest level.
  3. Movement: Sweep your dominant fingers twice across your non-dominant palm.
  4. Facial expression: Keep a neutral facial expression.
