How to Sign “Bread” in Sign Language

The ASL sign for "bread" is one you’ll slice into your daily routine, literally. Picture slicing a loaf with your dominant hand against the back of your non-dominant hand, mimicking a bread knife. Knowing this sign is a game-changer, whether you’re ordering at a bakery or explaining why your toast obsession is totally justified.

Signing “Bread”

  1. Hand shape: Start with your non-dominant hand in an “S” handshape. Then shape your dominant hand in a “bent-5” handshape, with all your fingers bent.
  2. Hand location: Bring your hands in front of your body at about chest level. The palms of both of your hands should be facing your body, your non-dominant hand closest to your body.
  3. Movement: Starting with your dominant hand in front of your non-dominant “S,” sweep your dominant hand downward twice, as if slicing bread.
  4. Facial expression: Keep a neutral facial expression.
